The phone jolted Owen from the project he’d been working on. It was a welcome distraction to hear Lara’s sweet voice on the line. His smile was instantaneous.

“Well, hello there, handsome.”

“Hi yourself.”

“I was wondering if you could get a lift home this evening. I’m going to cook a special dinner. I have a surprise for you. I’ve arranged an overnight stay for the tribe with my parents, so we’ll have the house to ourselves.”

“Sounds good to me. You’re sure they don’t mind having my girls stay too?”

“No, they are happy to do it. They are grateful to be able to spend time with my kids again. I was forbidden before and I rarely took the chance to go and see them. I regret that I didn’t do more. The more the merrier mum told me.”

“If you’re sure.

“I’m sure.”

“Okay. Charlie’s coming by to drop off some papers so he can give me a lift. I think I’m going to have to buy you a car,” he said with a laugh.

“As lovely as that thought is, you might not need to. I’m not saying anymore or I’ll ruin the surprise.”

“Okay … maybe we can christen my favourite recliner tonight. I’ve been imagining it for weeks.”

“Oh, you’re a naughty boy,” she whispered seductively.

His pulse went through the roof. “You’d better believe it. I’ve been taking it easy on you,” he said, again with a laugh.

“See you tonight. Hope you’re feeling energetic.”

Before he could respond she was gone.

An hour later, Charlie strolled into his office to deliver the contract for his next business assignment. Owen must have been wearing a goofy grin.

“Well, you look happy with yourself, Hadley.” Charlie’s jocular voice startled him out of his reverie.

“I’m happy, Chuck, my man. Life is great.”

“You’re going soft on me.”

“I think I’ve already gone. I can’t wait until her divorce is settled and she can relax more and worry less about McGregor.”

“Speaking of divorce, does Lara know you’re still married?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I didn’t think it was necessary to bring it up. I can’t find Angela anyway to finalise it. It’s not like Lara and I are going to get married in a hurry. I’ll keep looking for Angela and when I find her I can finalise my divorce as well.”

“I don’t think you should keep this from her. I can’t imagine she would be too pleased if she found out and you hadn’t told her.”

“I’m hoping she won’t find out before I do. Maybe after hers is final and her stress is gone.”

“I hope you know what you’re doing.”

“I do.” His voice didn’t hold the conviction he’d wanted to convey. “Can you give me a lift home? I have a private dinner to attend.”

“Okay, but I still think you should tell her.”

“Just as well it’s not up to you then,” Owen replied, harsher than he’d meant to, but it also meant that Charlie dropped the subject.
